Helping establish the Georgia Cherokee Community Alliance in 2018, James Stephen Mathis (Steve) has worked to strengthen connections among Cherokee families and preserve Cherokee culture and heritage. Drawing on a background in construction, business administration and ministry, he continues to serve Cherokees throughout the area. Mathis and his wife previously pastored a church in East Texas for 16 years before moving to Georgia. Raised near Dallas, he grew up in a close-knit Cherokee family with roots in the Winganon and Chelsea, Oklahoma, areas. His commitment to community is rooted in honoring his family and Cherokee heritage while creating opportunities for future generations and helping Cherokees reconnect with their culture.
