Dr. Charlotte Wilson Heth

Cherokee National Community Leadership Award, Individual

An accomplished ethnomusicologist, Dr. Charlotte Wilson Heth served 20 years as a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, and was the director of the university’s American Indian Studies Center for 11 years. She has curated exhibits at the Smithsonian Institution and published extensively on Cherokee music, with work that includes articles, books, edited journals, films and albums. Her PhD dissertation was titled “Stomp Dance Music of the Oklahoma Cherokee.” Dr. Heth’s honors include a Lifetime Academic Achievement Award from the American Folklore Society and a Life Membership Award from the Society for Ethnomusicology.
