An at-large community organization in Orange County, California, Cherokees of Orange County was founded in 2007. After several years of inactivity during the pandemic, the organization was revitalized in 2024 and has grown to approximately 70 households. Meeting monthly, the group builds community and fellowship through cultural workshops, Cherokee language and history classes, picnics, bonfires and traditional games. In May 2026, the organization assisted Cherokee Nation citizens affected by a local mandatory emergency evacuation using Cherokee Nation Health and Wellness grant funds. Cherokees of Orange County received a Cultural Perpetuation Award in 2025 and a Community Inspiration Award in 2026. Its work helps at-large Cherokee citizens maintain connections to Cherokee culture, history and community.
